Golden Gate Bridge - Worth A Visit

Think of San Francisco and one of the first things that comes to mind is the 8,981 feet of steel that crosses the bay, known as the Golden Gate Bridge. Opened in 1937 this famous bridge has been crossed and visited by millions of people and is one of the most photographed bridges in the world. The bridge cost more than $35 million to build and was completed ahead of schedule and under budget (when was the last time that happened?).

Visiting the Golden Gate Bridge is a wonderful experience and you can hike, walk, bike or take a guided tour there. People are allowed to walk on the East Sidewalk (side facing San Francisco) only and there are automatically-controlled gates that open and close the bridge at approximately sunrise and sunset. Just remember to leave the dogs at home as no pets are allowed on the bridge.
Unfortunately the Parks Conservancy's Golden Gate Bridge walking tours have stopped but they highly recommend the free Bridge walks offered by City Guides, a non-profit organization associated with the San Francisco Public Library. For more information, please visit - www.sfcityguides.org.

One of the best ways to enjoy the Golden Gate Bridge is by bike as you can ride the bridge 24 hours a day for free. Since both ends of the Bridge touch the Golden Gate National Park, not only can you visit the bridge but also ride through picturesque trails and stop at breathtaking vista points. Be sure to check out the Golden Gate and Pacific Overlooks located near the Bridge.

When you get to the Bridge there is more than amazing views to discover. Explore an old bunker that house exhibits of the Bridge and learn about the history, science, and construction through interactive exhibits. There is a Pavilion that is dedicated to telling the stories of the Golden Gate Bridge and houses the original 12-foot stainless steel Bridge "test tower" used in 1933. It is also a great place to purchase a few souvenirs and grab a quick bite to eat.

If your ideal vacation includes amazing views along with interesting history than the next time you travel to San Francisco be sure the Golden Gate Bridge is on your to do list.
