Included Shore Excursion: Dynjandi Falls - After meeting our local guide at the pier, we start our tour by driving straight to Dynjandi, the majestic "Jewel of the Westfjords". A series of 7 waterfalls falling like a bridal veil from the edge of a cliff, Dynjandi is breathtaking. We stop for an hour so we can enjoy the waterfall and scenic landscape. It is even possible to take a short hike for a closer look at the top tier and to get a spectacular view of the Dynjandi Fallsfjord and surrounding mountains.
The route back is longer as we drive through a steep mountain pass, charming fishing villages and some of the most beautiful fjords in Iceland. Arnarfjordur, 18 milies long, is one of the longest fjords in Iceland and famous in folklore for being home to sea monsters. The town of Thingeyri, one of the oldest settlements in the Westfjords is where the regional Viking assembly was held and the first trading post was established. Their scattered skyline is colorful, their blue-black mountain backdrop is stunning – they even have a handsome stave church, one hotel and a supermarket. The fishing is excellent, the mitten-makers are busy, and the wildlife is contented. Minke and humpback whales swim by in the fjord, while white-tailed sea eagles (Greenlanders call them “Nattoralik”) guard the sky and bring good luck to those who spot them. A stop at a workshop that crafts coats from sealskin will provide a glimpse into the unique local economy – in Greenland, seal meat is a mainstay in the diet and no by-products are wasted.
