Croatia and Exotic Mediterranean Singles Cruise Daily Itinerary
Cruise Day 1: Venice, Italy (Tuesday: May 3 / 5:00pm)
Welcome aboard Rhapsody of the Seas. Discover the magic and mystery of Venice, a city built entirely on water. Along the iconic Piazza San Marco, elaborate buildings attest to its splendor and elegance. But the city's character lies along crooked calli and across little bridges.
Cruise Day 2: Koper, Slovenia (Wednesday: May 4 / 7:00am - 6:00pm)
Slovenia is the only country in Europe that combines the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Pannonian Plain and the Karst. Backed by hills of olive groves and vineyards, Koper is an historic port and gateway to medieval Old Towns, seaside resorts and picturesque coastal villages. Slovenia’s beauty is found not so much in its cities, but in its green countryside. Slovenia has so many beautiful natural wonders, including a lake with an island church, a gorge with blue waters running through, enormous caves with dazzling rock formations, a castle built into the side of a mountain, and the gorgeous Julian Alps.
Included Shore Excursion
We drive from Koper to the Alpine region below the Julian Alps to reach Bled, the magnificent alpine resort. Perched atop a steep cliff rising 426 feet above the glacial Lake Bled is Bled castle, according to written sources the oldest castle in Slovenia. Bled Castle is how most people imagine a medieval fortress to be, with towers, ramparts, moats and a terrace offering magnificent views. We will reach the castle on foot via one of three trails. Then we take a pletna, a large gondola-like row boat with a canopy to visit the Church of Mary the Queen, also known as Our Lady of the Lake, located on the small island in Lake Bled, known as Blejski Otok.
Cruise Day 3: Split, Croatia (Thursday, May 5 / 9:00am - 5:00pm)
Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and the largest city of the region of Dalmatia. It is a vast coastal city with a vibrant, atmospheric Old Town, that is a maze of narrow alleys, little squares, boutiques, galleries and restaurants. In the 4th century Roman Emperor Diocletian wanted to retire to his native Dalmatia and built a vast palace here. Trogir is a historic harbor town on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. A wide seaside promenade snakes around the town, culminating in a charming port full of sailboats.
Included Shore Excursion
Take a walk through history on our guided tour of Split and Trogir, see how they have developed from ancient Roman Empire times to today. Explore the narrow streets of Split and visit the most photographed sights in Central Dalmatia, the Cathedral and Bell Tower of St. Domnius, located within the Diocletian's Palace. Visit the cellar of the Palace, which is a mirror image of the emperor’s residence above. Find the circular room and notice the impeccable acoustics; above was the foyer to the emperor’s bedrooms and the echos would warn Diocletian if anyone was coming.
We continue our journey through history in Trogir, a small, well preserved town encased in 15th-century walls. Trogir is a mosaic of monuments that date from ancient Greek to the Middle Ages and further on to the present. Stroll through the streets of this charming little town and visit the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, one of the finest architectural achievements in Croatia.
Cruise Day 4: Dubrovnik, Croatia (Friday: May 6 / 7:00am - 5:00pm)
Dubrovnik, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, is a stunningly intact walled city on the Adriatic Sea coast in the extreme south of Croatia and has maintained its independence for 450 years. Set between cobalt seas and the rugged Dinaric Alps, Dubrovnik is a medieval delight. Developing its merchant fleet activities all over the Mediterranean, Dubrovnik rose to one of the strongest merchant navies in the 16th century. Behind the thick defensive walls of its Old Town, discover lively promenades and narrow lanes lined with churches, monasteries, shops and cafes.
Included Shore Excursion
Gaze out at the historical streets and listen to our guide’s enlightening commentary on our panoramic drive through Dubrovnik. The best views of Dubrovnik are experienced from the top of the Srd Hill and what better way to enjoy the view then from the Dubrovnik Cable Car. On a clear day, we can see up to 37 miles.
Discover Dubrovnik's Old Town surrounded by mighty walls and fortresses, well preserved over the centuries. Accompanied by our local guide, who will entertain us with interesting stories, we will be given a walking tour of all the major sights of Dubrovnik’s Old City. Within the Franciscan monastery's solid stone walls is a gorgeous mid-14th-century cloister, historic pharmacy and a small museum with a collection of relics, including chalices, paintings, gold jewelry and pharmacy items. Artillery remains that pierced the monastery walls during the 1990s war have been saved, too. The old pharmacy is indeed an aged wonder–it’s the third oldest in all of Europe and the oldest pharmacy still in use on the continent today.
Cruise Day 5: Day at Sea (Saturday: May 7)
enjoy all the amenities of the Rhapsody of the Seas
Cruise Day 6: Aegina Island (Piraeus Port), Greece (Sunday: May 8 / 6:00am - 6:00pm)
Piraeus is the main port of Athens, the biggest port in Greece and one of the leading ports in the Mediterranean. The most important thing to do at the port is to take a ferry to the beautiful Greek Islands, including the island of Aegina. Aegina, located in the Argo-Saronic gulf close to the port of Pireaus, has played an important role in the course of Ancient and modern Greece. Aegina combines the elegance of the neoclassic mansions, that remind all who visit that they are in the first capital of the new Greek state, with its traditional island identity. The island is also known as the place where Nikos Kazantzakis wrote Zorba the Greek.
Included Shore ExcursionBoard our high-speed boat for our 40 minute ride to the island of Aegina. As we enter into the bustling port town, drink in the view: a moon crescent harbor with fishing boats, fruit filled caiques, and glamorous yachts. As we enter the harbor and Aegina Town, known simply as 'the center' to the locals, we are greeted by the small, white church of Saint Nikolas. Near the port is an archaeological place called "Kolonas" known for its one and only pillar and the hill of Kolonas was the Acropolis and the religious center of the ancient city. After our guided walking tour of old town Aegina, there is free time to take a horse driven carriage ride, have lunch by the beach or buy some fresh pistachios which is the island's specialty. After our wonderful island experience sit back and enjoy a panoramic drive of Athens & Piraeus before we board our cruise ship.
Cruise Day 7: Bodrum, Turkey (Monday: May 9 / 8:00am - 4:00pm)
Set on a beautiful peninsula in the southwestern Aegean Region of Turkey, Bodrum is a resort town with a long history; in-fact the Father of history, Herodotus, was born here and is the location of one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. Once a cozy fishing village of only a few thousand people, Bodrum has experienced a renaissance in the last half century that has transformed this once-sleepy community into one of Turkey's most popular vacation hot spots. Windswept beaches and glittering waters provide the backdrop to the perfect beach getaway.
Included Shore Excursion
Visit Bodrum Castle, built by the Knights Hospitaller in 1402 and originally known as the Castle of St. Peter/Petronium. After being defeated in Smyrna (ancient name of Izmir), the Knights came to Halikarnassos and began construction. Unknowingly, they used many stones from the great tomb of Mausolus on the walls of the castle, giving us this opportunity to view stones from Mausoleum, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The castle houses the largest underwater archaeological museum in Turkey. The Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology is not just a dusty collection of lifeless relics, it is an original, creative and exiting experience. It is a trip into a fascinating past that takes you back in time into the worlds of ancient mariners who sailed to meet their destiny shipwrecked on Anatolian shores or to the medieval Age of Knights. You can’t miss the Pedestrian shopping area that starts near the Castle and runs parallel to the row of restaurants and bars that line Kumbahce Bay. There’s a mix of clothing, jewelry, handicrafts, and souvenir shops to fit most tastes and budgets.
Cruise Day 8: Day at Sea (Tuesday: May 10)
enjoy all the amenities of the Rhapsody of the Seas
Cruise Day 9: Kotor, Montenegro (Wednesday, May 11 / 8:00am - 4:00pm)
With a population of 650.000, Montegro is an enchanting little country full of extreme geographical diversities. Great mountains with snow peaks, steep fiord-like hills, mountain lakes, mystical monasteries carved in the solid rock, sandy and sunny beaches that go on for miles alongside the coast….that is Montenegro. Located where the Balkans meet the Adriatic, Kotor sits on a deep bay surrounded by soaring cliffs. A hilltop fortress stands guard over the walled medieval Old Town, where you'll find small piazzas, elegant palazzos, lively cafes and shops.
Included Shore Excursion
After meeting our guide at the pier our tour of Kotor, Saint Stefan and Budva will begin. We get to drive along the 12 1/2 mile stretch of Budvan Riviera and enjoy spectacular views of the fabulous private island of St. Stefan, a luxurious resort that once used to be a small fishing village. Then explore the ancient town of Budva, considered to be one of the oldest settlements on the Balkan Peninsula and over 2500 years old. Surrounded by ramparts originating from the 15th century including a medieval fortification system with city gates, defense walls and towers. Budva's old city is a small labyrinth of narrow streets, the Citadela (an ancient castle), and little squares with valuable monuments of different Mediterranean cultures. Our tour continues as we discover the fascinating history of Kotor, one of Montenegro's most well-preserved medieval towns. Along the water is a formidable Venetian wall, which lends the city a medieval atmosphere. Within the walls are numerous stone churches including the Kotor (St. Tryphon) Cathedral built in 1166 and numerous palaces built by the important mercantile families of the city's past. Walk through the maze of Kotor's medieval quarter, its bustling market and beautiful Renaissance buildings.
Cruise Day 10: Zadar, Croatia (Thursday: May 12 / 10:00am - 6:30pm)
Situated on the Adriatic Sea, Zadar's rich history dates from prehistoric times as a Roman colony to present day. An intriguing city full of character, it is the fifth largest city in Croatia boasting a mixture of ancient ruins, Habsburg elegance, historical sights and cosmopolitan cafes. Two thirds of the city was destroyed in World War II and the more recent War of Independence, but careful restoration sits happily alongside impressive modern architecture. Zadar is a unique location with plenty for travelers to see, like the harmonic spectacle of the Sea Organ and the majestic Roman ruins that sprout randomly from the streets.
Included Shore Excursion
Be greeted by the Greeting to the Sun, a man-made 300-glass-plate circle, flush with the ground, as we come ashore. At the end of the Quay is Zadar's newest feature, the Sea Organ. This unusual organ is powered by the wind and the sea. When the sea pushes air through the whistles, a series of melancholy chords are played, with the sound emerging through the perforated stone stairs. You have to hear it to believe it! It will be easy to appreciate the sites of Zadar on our guided 3-hour walking tour of the historical center and the city's defensive walls, built by the Venetians in the 16th century as a defense against the Turks. The oldest part of the walls is on the eastern side of town, where a footbridge connects the Old Town with the newer parts. Opposite the footbridge are four medieval gates. We will visit the Church of St. Donatus, a round pre-Romanesque church built around the 9th century and has become a sort of symbol of Zadar. With a round, central building and three semi-circular apses, its features are most unusual.
Cruise Day 11: Venice Italy (Friday: May 13 / 6:45am)
Discover the magic and mystery of Venice, a city built entirely on water. Along the iconic Piazza San Marco, elaborate buildings attest to its splendor and elegance. But the city's character lies along crooked calli and across little bridges.

Cruise Day 9: Kochi, Japan (Wednesday: December 4, 2024 / 8:00am - 6:00pm)
Kochi, the capital of Kochi Prefecture is located on on the Southern coast of Shikoku island in Japan. Kochi's free and daring characteristics have created generous yet deeply strong residents called "Igosso" or "Hachikin," and the wisdom and activity of the people of Kochi, who are full of ideas, gave birth to special gardening crops and industrial technologies.
Included Shore Excursion: Kochi Castle & Japanese Tea Ceremony - Kochi Castle, one of just twelve Japanese castles to have survived the fires, wars and other catastrophes of the post feudal age, was built between 1601 and 1611, but most of its main buildings date from 1748. The castle buildings have since been designated "important cultural properties", and now house local treasures and historical objects. A unique feature of Kochi's castle is that its main tower (donjon) was not only used for military purposes, but also as a residence. The castle's wooden interior maintains the appearance of its Edo Period origins, and the lookout point from the castle tower's top floor has wonderful views.
Hirome Market is a place for locals and visitors to eat both local cuisine and international flavors. Many works of great importance have come out of this place, and there is a “secret” Buddha that is only shown to the public once every 50 years. Further, the five-storied pagoda built in the precinct is the only one in Kochi Prefecture, and the tower contains stupas from India.
Our final stop is to enjoy the panoramic views of Kochi City, Urado Bay and Kochi Port from the Godaisan Observatory. Kochi Prefecture’s premier viewing spot overlooking a grand panorama of mountains, harbor and city.

Dotonbori is said to be the best place to experience this kuidaore style extreme love of food. The street-side food stalls serve everything from kebabs and crabs to fugu and shabu shabu. In between bites, you can shop for souvenirs.

It takes a little over an hour to get there, has a population of about 21,000, and has an interesting history and a variety of sights. Fires have damaged or destroyed many of Kutna Hora's buildings in the 15th century but the town quickly rebuilt thanks to its continuing income from silver mining. In the 16th century, the silver mines were depleted and Kutna Hora's stopped growing.
Many of the other original buildings still stand with the crowning glory being the Cathedral of St Barbara, the most spectacular gothic cathedral in the Czech Republic. The town is most famous for its ‘bone church’, a chapel decorated with the bones of up to 40,000 people. So many people wanted to be buried in the holy ground that a local carver was commissioned.

lager barrels.

Tonight we watch the stunning forest of giant metal trees at the Gardens by the Bay light up in a rhapsody of colors to the sound of music that fills the entire park. The show lasts almost 15 minutes and the culmination is when the trees seem to explode in a firework-like fashion.
Vacation Day 5 - Singapore to Hong Kong
After breakfast our vacation continues as we fly from Singapore to Hong Kong. Upon arrival our group will be met and transferred to the New World Millennium Hotel to check-in.
When the sun goes down, the traders have already laid out their wares and the opera singers and fortune tellers begin to emerge. Welcome to the Temple Street Night Market, a place so steeped in local atmosphere that it has served as the backdrop to many a memorable movie. An interesting place for us to spend the evening and for cheap eats and souvenirs. Trinkets, tea ware, electronics, watches, menswear, jade and antiques are haggled over, while claypot rice, seafood, noodles and other treats are consumed with gusto.
Vacation Day 6 - Hong Kong Culture and More What a great way to start the new year, let's catch up on what’s been happening over the past 400 million years by visiting the Hong Kong Museum of History. Walk through prehistoric Hong Kong, explore the different Dynasties and learn about the Opium Wars, the Cession, the Japanese Occupation and the return of China. See replicas of village dwellings; traditional Chinese costumes and beds; a re-creation of an entire 1881 street, including an old Chinese medicine shop; a tram from 1913; and film footage of WWII, including
recent interviews.

Our day starts as we travel to the Chi Lin Nunnery, a large temple complex of elegant wooden architecture, treasured Buddhist relics and soul-soothing lotus ponds and the Nan Lian Garden, designed in the Tang Dynasty-style with hills, water features, trees, rocks and wooden structures.
Then we take a guided walk through the back streets of Kowloon for a glimpse into the local culture including the Jade Market, with 400 stalls of jewelry and accessories. Then, visit the nearby Tin Hau Temple complex to check out local senior citizens playing Chinese chess under the shade of the old banyan trees. After that, we join the throng at the Ladies’ Market where bargain clothes, beauty products and knick knacks await. Next is the Flower Market and then treat yourself to some of nature’s most beautiful songs at the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden.
Tonight we step aboard our Symphony of the Light cruise for the best spot to witness the most spectacular harbor and multimedia show in the world. 44 buildings erupt in colored lights, laser beams and searchlights to perform a synchronized 13-minute display set to music and commentary.
Vacation Day 8 - Hong Kong - Leisure - Shopping - Explore
Today is the day to discover Hong Kong your way. Take a stroll along the waterfront, spend time in a temple, enjoy one of Hong Kong's favorite drinks, Iced lemon tea, or shop till you drop. Hong Kong is perhaps the best shopping place in the world and offers the widest and most exclusive range of products, from international luxury goods to local souvenirs. Most goods from all over the world are tax free, and the prices are relatively low. You will enjoy the best service as the shopping assistants are always well-trained and put customers first.
Vacation Day 9 - Hong Kong - Lantau Island
Enjoy your morning at leisure. Perfect time for last minute shopping or exploring.
This afternoon we ride the cable car up to the Ngong Ping village, a replica of a traditional Chinese shopping street on Lantau Island. Stroll around the Village and be entertained by an ever-changing array of street performances. Nearby, pay your respects to the giant bronze Buddha. Up for a challenge?..... climb the 200 steps to Buddha's seat. Opposite is the Po Lin Monastery, one of Hong Kong’s most important Buddhist sanctums and home to many devout monks

This is an example of a popular sailing vacation itinerary on our 2wk Greek trips. However, no two trips are ever exactly the same; one of the greatest things about being on a sailboat is the flexibility to change our minds and our route to suit personal preferences, prevailing wind conditions, etc. The start and finish points are fixed, of course, but all else is changeable according to the whims of the wind gods and those on board !
Day One
Your yacht will be awaiting you at 11am in Evros Marina in Lakki (the main town/harbour of Leros). We'll have drinks, boat chat, show you're the ropes—and then head off for our first destination of Vathi, on the island of Kalymnos; a relaxing downwind sail to ease those landlubberly legs into shape slowly! About 3 ½ hrs sail time.
Vathi is a dramatic little spot; a well-hidden and very narrow fjord-like entrance, opening up into a tiny fishing village at the head of the bay. It boasts one main street and a collection of houses scattered into the valley; an unexpected patch of lush vegetation on an otherwise very dry and arid-looking island. Vathi is the only place on the entire island that is lucky enough to have it's own spring water supply, and they use it carefully to cultivate citrus fruits, figs, grapes and anything else that can be persuaded to grow.
It's also the home of "Poppy's"—one of our "adopted families", where momma makes the best homemade dolmades (stuffed grapeleaves) you'll ever taste in your life, and the swordfish steaks are out of this world!
Day Two
After breakfast and morning swims, we'll sail to Pandeli Bay on the east coast of Leros. This can be one of the longer sailing legs of the trip - if the winds are right, it's a perfect time to get a feel for the boat, especially for those who want to learn to sail. Great tacking practice! Time varies from 3-5hrs, wind dependent.
Pandeli Bay is one of the prettiest anchorages to sail into on this planet. The traditional blue-and-white houses scattered down the hillside; the little horseshoe-shaped bay, the beach tavernas conveniently just a 2 min swim from where we anchor the boat; it's a real picture-postcard scene. For those with plenty of night-owl energy, there is the infamous Savana Bar - a very idiosyncratic little local hangout, where we often end up dancing the night away!
Day Three
A leisurely morning in Pandeli; time to hike up to the fortress and get some stunning panoramic shots from the island's highest vantage point. Or perhaps just a cooling swim from boat to taverna, to recover from that dangerous Savana Bar place! Around midday, we'll set sail for Lipsos - island of the 42 blue-domed churches.
Lipsos is a quiet, very untouristy island; the harbour surrounded with an unruly array of whitewashed buildings - and those blue-domed churches everywhere! The vivid streaks of traditional blue trim and the blazing bougainvillea pinks & purples make it a real photographers' dream.
To cool off, there is a lovely little sandy beach, 5mins walk over the hill from where we moor the boats, and a great hike out to the headland with spectacular views out to sea.
Day Four
Here's hoping it's a calm morning so we can do our breakfast/swim stop at Macro Nisi ! It's a secluded little anchorage with sheer-sided cliffs, which have been known to entice the braver (or more foolhardy) amongst us to throw caution to the wind and leap off them ! For those more inclined to be adventurous in the water, there's a very cool, semi-submerged tunnel through the cliffs through which one can snorkel, emerging in little cave on the other side of the island.
Then we're off to Patmos - the famous Monastery Island, where St John was inspired by visions to write the Book of Revelations. The 10th century monastery (built by Crusader Knights) reigns over the island, still an active and influential part of daily life here. The village that lies at the foot of the monastery is everyone's romantic image of a Greek village; narrow winding alleyways scarcely wide enough for a skinny donkey! - cats sunning themselves on whitewashed streets, old ladies in black collecting fresh bread from the bakery in the morning. It's well worth an early rise to get up there in the dawn hours; the old ladies will look at you in faint amazement that a foreigner should find their way up there at such a time; if you can remember enough of our Greek lessons to say "kalimera!" (good morning), they'll give you a huge smile and a "kalimera-sas" back (good morning to you too) ! (Note: that's "kali-MER-a", not "calamari" :> ).
Day Five
If you could paint a picture of the perfect, tiny Greek island retreat - Marathi would be it. A horseshoe-shaped sandy bay, no regular ferry connections with other islands; you need your own boat to get here. Our adopted family here are so wonderful and hospitable too - and the food is incredible!! This tiny spot has hit top of the Favourite Spot list with our groups for several years now - so much so that it's been hard to persuade people that, really, we should leave, there are other islands to visit !
Sail to Samos—a total contrast! Samos is quite the upmarket, cosmopolitan island; the little harbour of Pythagorion is lined with dozens of tavernas along the waterfront. Pythagorion is the birthplace and home of the famous mathematician who gave his name to the theorum. He also had a most ingenious way of making sure his students did not drink too much wine at his lectures - check out the "Pythagoras Cup" ! It's a pretty, lively little port, with a very fun nightlife in the midsummer months.
The major attraction of the island, however, is once one gets out of the port. Samos is beautifully green—mountains covered with pine forests, streams, stunning cliffs and beaches—a real contrast to most of the other Dodecanese islands, which aren't exactly what you'd call lush. We often do a fun "jeep safari" , spending the day exploring all over the island.
Or, there's also a chance to take a day trip to Turkey and visit Kusadasi and Ephesus - great bargain-hunting in Kusadasi's maze of bazaars, and immensely impressive ruins of the ancient city at Ephesus (the Acropolis has nothing on this !).
Day 7 is the mid-point for those leaving us after one week, and the rendezvous point for those meeting us to join for the 2nd week's sail.
Sail to Agathonissi - approx 3-4hrs. A small, traditional island with just one fishing port and two tiny villages perched on top of the hillside; a population of just 150 people. On arrival, we'll no doubt be greeted by our host Giorgos - a.k.a. Unofficial Harbour Master and Ouzo King of Agathonissi ! A colourful evening at George's is usually on the menu; he loves to see our yachts sailing in - it's a great excuse for a party on an otherwise quiet and isolated island.
Day Nine
Sail for Arki. If the weather is sufficiently calm, we may be able to visit Tiganakia also en route; also known as "Caribbean Cove" for it's translucent turquoise waters!
Another tiny, traditional island, Arki boasts a permanent population of just 27 - not counting the goats! There is just one little port, a few houses scattered around the hillside - and most of all, Manoli's place ! Mr Cool Dude Manoli runs a wonderful little oasis of a taverna; cushions scattered around the shady patio, speakers hidden away in the trees. A short hike up the hill is a little church and the most amazing sunset views over the island.
Day Ten
A return visit to Patmos - timed to coincide with a great local dancing event! Up in the old village, there is often a traditional dance evening, with the most energetic and entertaining Greek dancing display we've ever seen ! It's a full-on costume event, with specialty dances from each of the Dodecanese islands - the first part of the evening, the locals show us how to do it - the latter part, it's our turn!
The next morning, there is still lots more to explore - we we could spend a week and still not be bored. Rent a little 50cc scooter or 4 wheel buggy and explore lots of little villages, bays, and our favourite "Quiche Beach" with their terribly decadent milkshakes! For the more energetic, there's a 45min hike to a really cool, sandy "clothing-optional" beach, often with a little surf rolling in on windy days.
A leisurely midmorning departure for a lunch stop at the little uninhabited island of Archangelos, with it's amazingly bright turquoise waters and deserted little coves. Plenty of time to swim, snorkel and just generally hang out, before sailing onwards for Emborios, on NE Kalimnos. A wide, sweeping bay surrounded by towering limestone cliffs; a great spot to chill out and relax after dancing the night away in Patmos!
Day Twelve
Sail to Paleonissos - a little-known secret of Kalymnos. Another dramatic and mountainous bay, tucked well away in the north of the island; anchorages like this are what make landlubbers fall totally in love with the cruising lifestyle ! There is little here apart from herds of goats; at dusk and dawn, the sound of their bells echoes around the hillside. With no distracting light around, the night sky is a dramatic sight; many an hour has been spent sitting on deck / on the beach simply star-gazing. Our unlikely-seeming dinner spot is a hike-and-scramble 5mins inland, through bushes of sweet-smelling sage - to the backyard of our local buddy Nicolas. Nick is a very eccentric character who delights in telling stories of the old Kalymnian sponge divers, and sometimes invites his music-loving companions from nearby villages to serenade us - bouzouki, guitar or even a goat-bladder (yes, really!)
A last chance to perfect those tacking skills, the final afternoon's sail being mostly into the wind. We'll arrive late afternoon into our home base of Lakki on the western side of Leros.
Farewell vacation dinner at Vromolithos - a beautiful beachfront taverna with the most amazing views over the bay - and for grand finale night - live Greek music !
This is an example of a popular itinerary on our Thailand-to-Malaysia trips. However, no two trips are ever exactly the same; one of the greatest things about being on a sailboat is the flexibility to change our minds and our route to suit personal preferences, prevailing wind conditions, etc. The start and finish points are fixed, of course but all else is changeable according to the whims of the wind gods and those on board !
Morning rendezvous in Phuket. As soon as our checkout formalities are completed, we'll be sailing north - to the weird and wonderful "seascapes" of Phang-Nga bay!
This bay feels like sailing into some sci-fi movie set; the limestone formations are so sheer and gravity-defying. Our destination for the evening is Ko Hong. "hong" being the word for "sea cave". The entrance to these hongs is usually a well-hidden little crevice in the cliff-face; a narrow tunnel opening up into an awe-inspiring oasis on the interior. Perfect for kayak expeditions!
Happy hour with the best pina coladas in the Andaman! - followed by our very own Thai chefs' gourmet dinner on board; an amazing array of tongue-tingling dishes
A relaxed morning's cruise southwards again, past more impossibly-balanced rocks, cliffs & islands. There is another hong to explore en route, paddling through a dramatic, mangrove-lined stream which winds its way inside a huge crevice in the island.
For the evening, we'll anchor at the famous Railey Beach, near Krabi. Sheer, palm-covered mountains rising vertically from the ocean, it's a well-known spot for those who like to scare themselves silly scaling these cliffs. There are even beginner's rock-climbing opportunities, for any adrenalin-addicts amongst us! Dinner ashore, there's dozens of fun little beach bars and restaurants.
Day Five
An early morning start, and a short hop to Phi Phi Li (Little Phi Phi), whose recent claim-to-fame is the Leonardo di Caprio movie "The Beach" . It's a spectacular little island - dramatic limestone cliffs, pure white sands and unbelievably bright turquoise waters. It's become crazily busy with daytrip boats during the day... hence we arrive late in the afternoon, leave early in the morning and inbetween, we have this stunning little spot all to ourselves! (OK, perhaps a few other yachties too!)
Well off the main tourist track, this is the place to go elephant-trekking if the idea appeals to you! The ride takes you way back into the tropical forest behind the beach, one could be hundreds of miles (and year!) from so-called civilisation. A hike through a babbling stream to a mini-waterfall is a great way to cool off, halfway through the ride. For the adventurous amongst us, the guides will let you ride on the elephant's head, the way they do... not just sit in the "passenger basket"!
Our breakfast stop for the next day, we have named The Lost Lagoon - an old pirate hangout. To find it, we swim through a winding, pitch-black sea tunnel (it's ok, we do have waterproof lights!). It's a spooky and thoroughly exciting feeling especially when one emerges the other end into a "Lost World" in the center of the island.
Unfortunately, the local daytrip boats from Phi Phi have now discovered this spot too - but as long as we get there early in the morning, we have it all to ourselves!
The destination for the afternoon is Charlie Beach, on Ko Muk - one of our favourite little beach hangouts. Somewhat smaller than Ko Lanta, but with a very cosy little beach bar and great BBQ restaurant. Cocktails on the beach at sunset, it doesn't get any more romantic than this !
The further south we sail, the further away from any kind of "tourist development" - and today's islands are right out in the middle of nowhere! A Marine National Park, Rok Nok is a protected wildlife habitat. An amazing array of coral gardens and brightly-coloured fish are literally right underneath the boat - one could snorkel for hours in the tropically warm waters! For our experienced divers, there's a chance to put tanks on and explore further underwater too.
Day Eight
This is our long sail day - Wind Gods willing, we should have a lovely 6hrs or so downwind sailing ! Our destination is the Butang group of islands. Part of the Tarutao Marine National Park, these islands have the most wonderfully clear water and beautiful coral gardens. Ko Adang is our stop for the night - more fantastic snorkelling and a deserted tropical beach completely to ourselves.
A morning to explore some more of that ever-changing underwater scenery. under the water as well as above. It's also a very fun place to take out the kayaks and explore along the rocks and crevices of the beach.
Some time after lunch, we'll head out for our next stop, a short distance to Ko Lipe - a long sandy beach which is home to a little community with a distinct "flower-power" ambiance! The local village, about 15mins walk through the island is still not at all "developed" - wooden huts, a great little schoolhouse, and kids who still smile and giggle if you take their photo (and love to see themselves on a digital camera screen!)
A lazy morning, a final swim or two... and then we're off to Langkawi !
Our mooring is at Telaga Harbour - a cosy, friendly little place, yet with all the handy facilities of an upmarket marina.
We'll do our customs paperwork this afternoon - whilst the skipper is busy with bureaucracy, there's a few fun things to do close to the marina. Langkawi's amazing cable car ride is just 5 mins away - a very adrenelin-inspiring trip to the top of the highest mountain on the island! For any shopping addicts, the main town of Kuah is about 30 mins away, lots of great bargains to be hunted down. For anyone wishing to stay longer in Langkawi, we can highly recommend the Mutiara Bay hotel, just 5mins from the marina , where many of our single sailors have stayed and loved!
Disembarkation is at 9am as this wonderful sailing vacation ends.
Ongoing connection info: Telaga Harbour is about 10 mins from the international airport of Langkawi. The main town and ferry port of Kuah is in the south of the island, about 30mins taxi ride away. There are frequent ferries to the Thai mainland (Satun), to Penang and several other places in Malaysia.
No Dates Available!
Our philosophy is very simple; our costs are as inclusive as we can sensibly make them. We figure most people would prefer to know ahead of time what the total vacation cost is; not have to worry about little additional surprises along the way!
On our Adventure Sailing trips, once you get on the boat, everything on board is covered. We provide provisions for breakfasts, lunches, drinks (yes, that includes open bar - local liquors, beer & wine). The only thing we don't include is dinners - the local taverna experience ashore is much too much fun to miss!
So unlike the usual yacht charter in the Med - there's no unexpected extras to catch you out halfway ("Oh, you didn't realise how much this marina costs?" or "That'll be another 300 euros for the fuel bill, thank you very much!" ).
With the more usual bareboat-plus-skipper arrangement, you're up for everything else - fuel, water, mooring, local taxes, food, on board bar bills - even the skipper's food and drink!
Our Singles Sailing vacation philosophy is that nasty $$ surprises don't do anything for a relaxing vacation - and we emphatically don't work that way. We'd prefer you to eat, drink and be merry - without worrying how much extra it will cost!
Rendezvous is at 11am at Boat Lagoon – the main marina on Phuket. As soon as everyone is all aboard and boat briefings done - it’s off north to the weird and wonderful seascapes of Phang-Nga bay. It feels like sailing into some sci-fi movie set; the limestone formations are so sheer and gravity-defying. Our destination for the evening is Ko Hong ( “hong” = “sea cave”), where we can kayak and swim to explore before that most important evening ritual – Happy Hour! This will also be our first dinner aboard the yacht – with 360 water views and our own private chef, it’s not too bad a restaurant.. :>
A relaxed morning’s cruise southwards again, past more impossibly-balanced rocks, cliffs & islands – lunchtime stop at Bamboo island. Swim, eat, swim (a familiar pattern-to-be! ) - then head off for an evening at the famous (and totally stunning) Railey Beach. Sheer, palm-covered mountains rising vertically from the ocean, it’s a well-known spot for those who like to scare themselves silly scaling these cliffs. There are even beginner’s rock-climbing opportunities, for any adrenalin-addicts amongst us! Dinner ashore, there’s dozens of fun little beach bars and restaurants.
The next morning, there is chance to visit Tiger Cave and Temple, a 30 minute minibus ride inland. This place is not as overtly dramatic and ornate as some of the more well-known Thai wats; what attracts us is it’s deeply spiritual, calm Buddhist ambiance. This is not a “tourist destination” - it’s a place that the locals visit to pay their respects to the monk community there. For the energetic, there is a steep climb to a stunning viewpoint, a huge Buddha keeping an eye on us mere mortals below; for those who prefer to take it easier (and cooler!), there is a shady hike through an enormous and ancient forest. It’s also home to a troop of very mischievous monkeys, watch out for your drinks and snacks, they’re fast !
Just around the corner from Railey beach is the little town of Ao Nang – a great place to do a little shopping. There’ll be a couple of hours ashore here – then it’s a short hop to Chicken Island. A quiet, tranquil contrast to the day’s activities, and usually a beautiful sunset to accompany our infamous Pina Coladas! It’s also our first great snorkelling spot, lots of coral and tropical fish to swim amongst.
A lovely downwind sail to Ko Lanta – a beautiful long, white sandy beach with which has happily not yet made it onto the main tourist map! Home of the infamous Why Not Bar, which somehow seems to exert an irresistible magnetic force on our seascape sailors… they seem unable to escape the decadent floor cushions and their interesting Thai version of reggae!
Being off the main tourist track, this is the best place we have found to go elephant trekking ! Heading way into the “jungle”, you even get chance to ride the elephants “bareback” – or bare-head, we should say ! - if you want.
A leisurely start to the morning, as it’s a short trip to our next destination of Ko Muk. If the weather is sufficiently calm, there’s a great lunchtime snorkeling spot en route. By early afternoon, we’ll be anchored at “Charlie Beach” – another off-the-beaten track little spot, with a fantastic beach barbie right on the waterfront! A feast fit for a king or three, on a pauper’s budget… it’s pretty amazing fare. Also amazing are the sunsets over the water…. this is what tropical sailing is all about !
A very early start – yes, we are talking sunrise here ! We have a truly stunning spot to visit; the Lost Lagoon of Ko Muk. To find it, we have to swim through a totally pitch-black sea tunnel (it’s ok, we do have flashlights!). It’s a spooky and thoroughly exciting feeling – especially when one emerges the other end into a ‘Lost World’ in the center of the island !
Unfortunately, the local daytrip boats from Phi Phi have now discovered this spot too - but we have it all to ourselves in the early morning hours before they arrive… !
As soon as they do – we’re off ! A beam reach to the Rok Nok islands – a national marine park, teeming with multi-coloured fish & coral gardens. This is one of the most amazing snorkelling grounds in the area; and for our experienced scuba divers, there are some impressive dropoffs too.
Once the main heat of the day dies down, there is great hike up to the island’s peak – and watch out, There Be Dragons !! OK, so not really….they are just monitor lizards, but pretty big and impressive-looking!
Early start the next day to get to Phi Phi island – one of the livelier spots ! It’s a fun contrast to all those quiet tropical islands – chance to do some great bargain-hunting, another of those muscle-melting Thai massages, and lots of very decadent, fruit-filled cocktails! It’s also a top spot for a night on the town; great music and much dancing…
We’ll be spending most of the next day in Phi Phi - time for more shopping or Thai massages to recover from the night’s celebrations. Then later in the afternoon, we’ll be setting sail for Phi Phi Li ( “Little Phi Phi”), whose recent claim-to-fame is the Leonardo di Caprio movie “The Beach” . It’s a spectacular little island - it’s dramatic limestone cliffs, pure white sands and unbelievably pale turquoise waters are made for picture postcards. And being there late in the afternoon/early next morning, we can totally escape the daytrippers, and have the place just about to ourselves…
As soon as the day trip boats arrive – we’ll be off. “Pearl Island” is our destination; a tiny island surrounded with coral and those white sand beaches – and home to – yes, you guessed it – a pearl farm! Best to leave that plastic on the boat… J
Our final destination will be either Boat Lagoon again if tides are favourable; if not, we will end in one of the bays on the south of Phuket. Neither place is very far from anywhere, Phuket not being exactly a large island!
Disembark 9am Vacation ends.
